An ancient Temple City in South India has a long history and culture. Silk weaving has been carried out in villages around Kanchipuram from ancient times. Behind the exquisitely designed and woven silk sarees are tales of woe in the life of the weavers. Recognition of the male weavers alone, by the weaves co-operatives of the Government and their monopoly in getting raw materials including golden thread led to the male weavers pledging the raw materials to have cash to spend on liquor. As a result women and children were thrown into the hands of poverty. In 1990 with UNFPA/ILO, WWF initiated a branch for women weavers. This resulted in their visibility, reduced their indebtedness and relieved children from child bondedness and led to women weaver occupational mobility. Today, the membership in this branch is 25830 members in 327 villages.
