Beedi workers and match stick makers were organised and unionised resulting in revision of their wages and amelioration of their oppressive working conditions. Access to credit relieved their children from bondage, enabled the payment of minimum wages by the employers and initiation of pension schemes for these workers. Today, Vellore has 13463 members in 357 villages.
